Let me start at the beginning. Things had not been going well for me recently. It was nothing serious, it’s just that I had a little tension in my life. I hadn’t been sleeping well. On this night, I couldn’t seem to get to sleep. Everytime I closed my eyes, a hundred things started racing through my head. I finally decided to just get up, move to the den and watch TV for a while. I finally fell asleep on the sofa and must have slept like a baby. When I awakened, it was 7:30–an hour past my wake-up time. I could vaguely hear my clock radio upstairs in my bedroom. I had to get ready for work and get there fast!
I pulled myself off the couch, took a quick shower, tossed on the clothes that I had put out the night before, grabbed what I needed and raced out the door. Unfortunately, the night before I had to park my car almost a full block way. I took a quick look at my watch to see that I was only going to be about thirty minutes late. I had managed to make up for some of my missing time already. I felt a little relieved until…I got to my car and realized that I didn’t have my keys. I now remembered that those keys were now resting comfortably inside my locked townhouse. You guessed it. My house key was safely on that same keychain! I was not a happy camper.
Coincidentally, my next-door neighbor was just coming home from his night-shift job, parking in an open curb space across the street. As he got out of his car, with a fast-food paper bag containing his breakfast and a cup of coffee in his hand, I all but tackled him as I ran across the street to tell him my problem. I know he felt sorry for me because he immediately helped me into the passenger side of his vehicle, exited his prime parking space and went on to drive me to my office. Not only did he get me to work on time, but he insisted I eat the breakfast sandwich he had purchased, assuring me that he could stop by the drive-thru again for another one on his return back home.
Thanks to this wonderful friend, I was able to get to work on time and make my presentation without my stomach growling. I wanted to give my neighbor something as a token of my appreciation and settled on a key chain. Not just ANY key chain, mind you, but an Italian Charm Keychain.

Everyone has a story about their mother. Mothers are as different as their unique personalities. Some are patient and kind. Some are loud and obnoxious. Others are very opinionated. My mother is celebrating her eightieth birthday in a couple months. She is one of those women who needs nothing, and who finds happiness in the simplest things. I decided to pay tribute to her life, and especially her motherhood, buy selecting an assortment of Italian charms that would each have special meaning to her. Each charm reflects a certain period of her life as a wife, a mother and a grandmother. I’m sure it will bring tears for her, but I’m sure it will also remind her of many happy times with more to anticipate.

A mother’s love for her toddler is patient, as she tirelessly teaches this youngster what society expects of them. Temper tantrums thrown in frustration are dealt with. Lessons in potty training and communication are constant. Though this stage is short-lived, it takes a lot of energy to keep up with a rambunctious child of this age. The mother’s love grows with each accomplishment.
The love for the school-aged child can best be described as consistent, as the mother learns to let her child develop an individual personality. She allows her child to socialize; enables her child to experience life; challenges her child to become independent; supports her child through trials and triumphs, alike. Through all of these stages of development, her love is unwavering.
In a mother’s eyes, her child can usually do no wrong, regardless of the circumstances. Not so true in the tumultuous adolescent years. Because the mother did such a good job of raising her child to be an independent, self-reliant individual, teen-agers often push themselves into adulthood before they are actually ready. Mistakes are made. Often, all a mother can do is guide the child to learn from their mistakes; to make better decisions; to accept that her child is not perfect. In this stage of motherhood, her love needs to be very forgiving and understanding.
The child who becomes an adult understands and appreciates the love their mother has shown them over the years. They realize she has been their biggest fan; their strongest support; their best teacher; their most sincere critic. The mother of an adult child finally sees that her sacrifices and efforts in raising her child were not in vain. The love she has for her adult child is full of pride.
There is a special bond formed by mother and daughter once the daughter becomes a mother. The mother’s ever-changing role is now defined by the name “Grandmother”, and she understands…she knows…she empathizes and sympathizes with what her daughter will need to be as a mother. For, there is no stronger love than that of a mother; and no love more rewarding than becoming a grandmother!Shall we all drink a hearty toast to our mother’s whose love has always enveloped us?
