If you have the special honor of hosting a baby shower for a friend or family member, you’re well aware that there are many important aspects and details that will need taking care of before the big day arrives. Making the baby shower centerpieces is one of those tasks that will definitely require a bit of creativity and some patience, but luckily, it isn’t one that has to cost a fortune either.
Baby Shower Centerpieces – Edible
– Candy Topiaries: Build candy topiaries using Styrofoam balls and blocks, decorative or plain flower pots, toothpicks, a glue gun, some large cinnamon sticks, candy corn or other similar types of semi-hard candies.
– The Watermelon Buggy: If you’re feeling extra creative, carve a watermelon into the shape of a baby buggy or carriage, which actually isn’t as difficult as it first looks, and then fill with all sorts of delicious fruits such as grapes, melon balls, and cherries. You can use cherries and slices of orange in the middle for “hubcaps”, and garnish with lettuce underneath.
Non-Edible Baby Shower Centerpieces
– Baskets: You should be able to find some nice baskets in your local dollar store, and select from these to use for your basket centerpiece. These can be things geared to the Mom-to-be or take home gifts for the guests. Baskets can be just about any container these days, so be creative and think outside the box (basket!).
Some fillers for the basket could include bottles, toys, socks, pacifiers, teethers, lotions, and bath toys, or if the centerpieces are for the guests, add candles, aromatherapy items, coupons for book stores, spas, and hair salons, as well as bubble bath, books, nail polish, chocolates, and useful items for the kitchen.
Baby Sock Roses: You can use plain vases to hold your baby sock roses. Select artificial flowers that fit with your color theme, baby’s breath, wire and some pairs of baby socks in your chosen color. Oh, and don’t forget some greenery as a foil. Tightly roll each sock, thinner fabrics work best, starting from the toe working to the open end, and then fastening with double-sided tape.
Experiment with rolling or folding the socks to achieve the desired look of petals, and then insert the floral wire and wrap the bottoms of the “flowers” in green floral tape before arranging in vases.
– Diaper Cakes and Wreaths: Don’t dismiss diaper cakes and wreaths as old favorites that have been overdone, as both of these creations can be easily turned into one-of-a-kind masterpieces depending on the decorations you use to “ice” the cake or finish off the wreath. The idea could be used to make diaper cupcakes, also using either disposable or cloth diapers.
Some other ideas include using colored balloons either alone or with flowers, or attached to cute stuffed animals with pretty ribbons. A cute plush toy can be transformed into a centerpiece with imaginative decoration, useing things like bibs, baby blankets, baby bottles and so on.
You can paint cheap flower pots and decorate them using your color theme. Stenciling them with pretty designs can make them even better and more unique. Instead of buying costly flowers from a florist, head to the supermarket the morning of the shower and purchase a few seasonal bouquets for a fraction of the price. You can then break down the bouquets and added to the pots, or even displayed singularly, each in a clear glass vase.
Once you have made your decisions on baby shower centerpieces then you can think about getting organized and sending out those baby invites.
Baby shower decorations create a mood for the celebration and help to enhance the overall baby shower theme. By using bits and pieces of party favors and other elements, the party organizer can tie a theme together and bring a personal touch to the décor. Here are a few tips for using baby shower decorations to enhance your shower theme.
Traditionally, colors for baby shower themes were either pastel pink or blue, and these colors would spill over into the baby shower decorations. Today, anything goes. Although some party planners will still stand by the tried-and-true pink and blue, others opt for brighter primary colors like red, yellow and blue. Perhaps the mother-to-be has a favorite color you could use instead. If she loves orange, go for it! Ask friends and family what color the guest of honor prefers.
The perfect baby shower decorations are simple, and practical is even better. Try decorating your baby shower themes with items that do double-duty as decorations and party favors or gifts. Unopened jars of baby food can be used as balloon anchors, then given to the expectant mom after the shower. You can create a mood with lightly scented candles as baby shower decorations, and give them as shower favors before guests go home.
Another idea is to decorate the guest-of-honor chair with a baby gift clothesline. Hang a clothesline up, attaching one end to the chair, and decorate the line with baby blankets, clothes, booties, bibs, hooded towels, and other baby necessities attached by colorful clothes pins. Suggest that guests bring an item for the baby clothesline, too.
The gift display can be part of the baby shower decorations. Streamers and other decorations hung from an open umbrella above the gift table look very nice. Set up a baby’s bassinet in a corner of the room. From the ceiling above, hang tulle, a reasonably priced fabric available at any fabric store. Let the fabric drape and flow around the bassinet. As the gifts fill it, place the overflow on the ground around the bassinet for a show-stopping centerpiece. If you don’t have a bassinet, use a larger gift the mommy-to-be will receive instead. This baby shower decoration results in a lovely photo for the baby memory book.
An edible centerpiece can play important part of the baby shower decorations. Carve a watermelon into the shape of a baby carriage and use it as the table centerpiece. Placing the watermelon lengthwise, cut one quarter out then scoop out the inside. Carve a zigzag edge around the canopy top. Slice up other types of fruit and re-fill the watermelon. Decorate with ribbon around the edge to make the centerpiece look frilly. Any presentation of food can be part of the shower theme as well as the baby shower decorations.
Keep your baby shower decorations simple. If you don’t have a lot of time to spare for elaborate baby shower themes, you may want to consider decorating the night before or enlist the help of other guests. The simplicity of your plan and the extra help will go a long way to keep your stress levels low and enable you to enjoy the event as much as everyone else.
