Founded in Germany in 2005, Swoopo is one of the world’s most innovative auction sites. Based on a unique software solution and business model, the company sells premium products like: computers, cameras, game consoles and even cars, at very low prices, according to its Web site. The company’s Web site says Swoopo auctions over 10,000 products per month and has more than 1.2 million registered customers.
It works this way: Online customers purchase “bids” in advance. They cost 60 cents each and are sold in packs of 40, 75, 150, 400 or 1,000. Bidders have the choice of using an electronic bid assistant called the “BidButler” or of placing single bids.
Every bid placed increases the auction countdown by up to 20 seconds and the price of the product by 12 cents. Each auction displays the amount spent on bids by the customer and how much the bidder would save overall, if they won the auction at that moment, to help the customer keep track of the money spent on bidding.
The “last bidder standing” when the countdown reaches 0:00 wins the auction — usually at a very low price. According to the company Web site, winners save, on average, 65 percent when compared to the recommended retail price.
Swoopo was successfully launched in the UK in December 2007, followed by Spain in May 2008 and the US and Austria in September 2008.
Swoopo is an Internet company with a unique, worldwide business model. Swoopo states it is the creator of “Entertainment Shopping” on the Internet, and, one of the first companies to combine e-commerce and entertainment. All of its auctions are buzzing from the first to the last second. Swoopo’s Web site states every user can get top of the range, brandname products for extraordinarily low prices.
Its Web site states that the company’s staff has the passion and ambition to carry the Swoopo idea from its origin in Munich to the rest of the world, on the way establishing the company as a major international e-commerce player.
Most Internet users are aware of eBay and how it works. People put items up for sale, and auction users bid on the items they want. At the end of the auction, whoever has bid the most money wins the item. Though eBay is large and profitable, it is only one of many web auctions on the Internet. There are many out there, you just have to find them.
Some sites have web auctions for just about anything you can dream of, while others specialize. There are some just for tools, and others just carry clothing, shoes, and accessories. If you can’t find something on eBay, you may find it on one of those other sites. You may also find a better price because the site is not as popular as eBay, and not as many people are bidding on the item you are looking to buy.
Some people use these smaller web auctions to find bulk items to sell for a profit on eBay. This can work if you are willing to put the time into looking for exactly what you need. You might want to look at eBay to see what sells well, and the average price for each item. You can even buy higher priced items like DVD players or digital recorders to sell for a profit on eBay.
One problem with other web auctions is that it can be a bit iffier than dealing with eBay. Though these other sites may have the same rules as eBay does about above board conduct, the other sites don’t have the power behind them that eBay does. This means that if something goes wrong, you may not be able to get your money back, or the dud you bought might be something you just have to live with.
A friend of mine decided to try website auctions as a new way to make some extra cash. She bought two high-end digital camcorders on a smaller auction site, and put them on eBay. Despite a few hicups, she ended up selling both. The problem was that, the second model turned out to be defective. She had to return the money to the buyer, and ended up having to keep the bad equipment. Needless to say, she lost money on the venture.
So remember to use extra caution if you venture onto web auctions other than those hosted by eBay. Check everything over carefully when you get it, and remember to read the fine print. This might also be great advice for users on eBay as well. Even though this site is established and the most popular, there are still problems that can crop up if you don’t pay attention.
