The most effective sunless spray tan relies on a substance known as dihydroxyacetone or DHA that causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the skin, triggering the brown color of the dead skin layer at the skin surface. The coloring process achieved with a sunless spray tan involves neither exposure to the ultraviolet rays nor pigmentation. The main impact on the skin is the color change that lasts from three to ten days. Longer effects are achieved if the sunless spray tan combines DHA with another chemical: erythrulose, that prolongs the brownish look. Sunless and safe, this is the advantage of modern tanning systems.
Although sunless spray tan products carry FDA approval and certification, there are people who do not tolerate the chemical ingredients. The most serious health issue related to the application of a sunless spray tan is contact dermatitis triggered by the poor tolerance of erythrulose or DHA. Experts advise and encourage users to test any cosmetic treatment on a small skin portion before applying it on the entire body. The absorption of the active elements could last for a few hours, and you should not use the cream, gel or spray unless twenty-four hours have lapsed from the skin test.
If the skin remains clear in this time interval, then, the sunless spray tan can be safely used on the entire body. As for the application procedure, you’ve got two choices: either do it yourself, or go to salon. A better tan is normally achieved when you choose the professional application because the equipment used in salons allows for an even, uniform body coverage. Spray tan booths represent the most advanced tanning technology you can find, but if compared with the rest of the methods, it is pretty expensive.
